Waves

What  is wave?

• A disturbance causing energy transfer through a medium from one location to another location is called "Wave".
• A medium is a substance or material that carries the wave.
• Energy is transferred during the wave motion.

Parts of Wave:

• The highest point on a wave is called "Crest or Peak".
• The lowest point on a wave is called "Trough".
• The horizontal distance between the two successive crests or troughs is called "Wavelength". It is represented by the symbol "λ". 
• The vertical distance between the crest and trough is called "Wave Height".
• The half of the wave height is called "Amplitude".

Types of Waves:

Longitudinal Waves:

• Movement of particles are parallel to the direction of wave propagation.
• Sound waves moving through the air is an example.

Transverse Waves:

• Movement of the particles are at right angles (perpendicular) to the direction of wave propagation.
• Light waves are the example.
